ASTM D3330/D3330M
ASTM D3330, formally titled “Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape,” measures the force required to peel a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape away from a standard test surface. That force — the peel adhesion value — is a direct indicator of a tape’s bond strength and adhesive quality.
The standard applies to a wide range of pressure-sensitive tapes, including surgical and medical tapes, electrical tape, packing tape, duct tape, and labels. Because peel adhesion determines whether a tape performs in the field, ASTM D3330/D3330M testing is widely used for quality control, material and supplier selection, and troubleshooting adhesion problems. D3330/D3330M tape testingoften accompanies the tensile testing WESTPAK performs on the same materials. It is distinct from package seal-strength testing: if you need to measure the strength of a pouch or package seal, that is covered by WESTPAK’s seal strength peel testing (ASTM F88).
ASTM D3330 Test Methods (A–F)
ASTM D3330 defines six methods so adhesion can be evaluated for different tape constructions and peel geometries. Methods A through E use a 180° peel angle; Method F uses a 90° peel angle.
| Method | Peel Angle | What It Evaluates |
|---|---|---|
| Method A | 180° | Adhesion of a single-coated tape to a steel test panel |
| Method B | 180° | Adhesion of a single-coated tape to its own backing |
| Method C | 180° | Adhesion of a double-coated tape |
| Method D | 180° | Adhesion of the release liner to the adhesive (single- or double-coated tape) |
| Method E | 180° | Adhesion of an adhesive transfer tape |
| Method F | 90° | Adhesion of a single-coated tape to a steel test panel (90° geometry) |
Our team can help you select the method that matches your tape construction and end use.
The ASTM D3330/D3330M Peel Adhesion Test Procedure
While setup varies by method, the core ASTM D3330 procedure follows the same general repeatable steps:
- Specimens are conditioned in a controlled environment (per ASTM D4332), typically for at least 24 hours before testing.
- The tape is applied to a clean stainless steel test panel (typically 302 or 304 stainless) using a controlled roller for even, repeatable application pressure.
- Dwell time is held consistent, because adhesion increases the longer a tape rests on the panel.
- The specimen is loaded into a tensile testing machine and peeled at the constant rate specified in the standard — 300 mm/min (about 12 in./min) — at the 180° or 90° angle.
- Force is recorded throughout the peel; the initial portion (the first 25 mm) is discarded, and the average force over the following measurement length is divided by the specimen width to calculate the peel adhesion value.
WESTPAK provides detailed reports documenting the peel adhesion value along with the method used, dwell time, specimen width, and test conditions.
Interpreting Results and Setting Acceptance Criteria
The ASTM D3330/D3330M result — the peel adhesion value — is reported as force per unit width (for example, ounces per inch or newtons per unit width). Comparing that value against a defined acceptance criterion tells you whether a tape meets requirements.
Acceptance criteria can be based on regulatory expectations, internal quality standards, or customer specifications. WESTPAK works with clients to relate the peel adhesion data to their specific requirements and, where the peel curve reveals it, to interpret the mode of adhesive failure — insight that helps engineers optimize tape and adhesive selection.
Why Choose WESTPAK for ASTM D3330/D3330M Testing
ASTM D3330 sits within WESTPAK’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 scope of accreditation (A2LA), currently accredited through January 31, 2028 at our California laboratories. That accreditation means your peel adhesion data is independent, traceable, and defensible in front of auditors, customers, and regulators.
- Accredited, third-party results — not an in-house test you have to defend on your own.
- Experienced engineers and technicians and calibrated tensile systems, backed by more than 40 years of materials and package testing.
- A partnership approach: we help you choose the right D3330/D3330M method, interpret the results, and connect the data to your broader medical device packaging or package testing program.
Rather than investing in dedicated peel-testing equipment and fixtures, you get accurate ASTM D3330/D3330M data from a lab that runs these tests every day. Related analyses such as coefficient of friction testing are available on the same samples when you need a fuller picture of tape or film performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to our most frequently asked questions.
What is ASTM D3330?
ASTM D3330 is the “Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape.” It measures the force required to peel a pressure-sensitive tape from a test surface, providing a quantitative measure of the tape’s bond strength.
What does an ASTM D3330 test measure?
It measures peel adhesion — the average force, per unit width, needed to remove a pressure-sensitive tape from a standard steel panel (or other specified surface). Higher peel adhesion generally indicates a stronger adhesive bond.
What are the ASTM D3330 test methods?
The standard defines six methods (A–F) covering single-coated tapes, double-coated tapes, adhesive transfer tapes, and release liners. Methods A–E use a 180° peel angle and Method F uses a 90° peel angle.
What is the difference between 90° and 180° peel testing?
It is the angle at which the tape is pulled from the surface. Methods A–E peel the tape back on itself at 180°, while Method F peels at a 90° angle using a specialized fixture. The geometry changes how the adhesive is stressed during the test.
What industries use ASTM D3330 testing?
Medical device and healthcare (surgical and wound-care tapes), electronics (electrical tape), packaging (packing and duct tapes), and consumer goods — any product that relies on a pressure-sensitive adhesive bond.
Is WESTPAK accredited for ASTM D3330?
Yes. ASTM D3330 is within WESTPAK’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 scope of accreditation (A2LA), currently accredited through January 31, 2028.
Where can I get the ASTM D3330 standard?
The full standard is available for purchase directly from ASTM International. WESTPAK can help you apply the appropriate method to your product.
