ASTM D4728 Reapproved for 2026: What It Means for Your Testing

ASTM has reapproved D4728, Standard Test Method for Random Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers. The active edition is now ASTM D4728-17(2026). For packaging teams, that raises a practical question: Does your testing program need to change?

A reapproval—not a new test method

A reapproval confirms the continued use of an existing standard without introducing technical changes. In this case, the test method’s technical requirements remain unchanged.

Our recommendation: Treat the reapproval as an opportunity to review your program—not an automatic instruction to repeat testing.

Why random vibration testing matters

Shipping vibration affects the entire package system, not just the outer container. ASTM D4728 evaluates how the container, interior packaging, closures and contents perform together under random vibration. It helps assess whether that system provides adequate product protection.

The standard also emphasizes using vibration tests based on representative field data. The goal is meaningful testing that reflects the distribution environment your products actually encounter.

What should you review?

Before changing your test plan—or assuming nothing needs attention—we recommend checking three areas:

  • Your documentation. Do protocols, specifications or internal standards lists need an updated reference to D4728-17(2026)?
  • Your test conditions. Do your vibration profiles and package orientations still reflect how your products are shipped?
  • Your product and packaging. Have materials, closures, product configurations or shipping routes changed since your last evaluation?

Use that review to determine whether documentation updates, further assessment or additional testing are appropriate for your specific situation.
