ASTM D642 Was Updated – Here’s What Changed In ASTM D642-25

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has released an updated version of ASTM D642, the Standard Test Method for Determining Compressive Resistance of Shipping Containers, Components, and Unit Loads.

The update includes several key revisions aimed at enhancing testing consistency and accuracy, making sure shipping containers, unit loads, and components can withstand the compressive forces they are subjected to during storage and distribution.

ASTM D642-25: Key Changes

Here’s a summary of the changes to ASTM D642 and how they may impact your business:

  1. References to ASTM D5118 and ASTM D6804 Added: To ensure consistency across testing standards, references to ASTM D5118 (Standard Specification for Fiberboard Shipping Boxes) and ASTM D6804 (Standard Guide for Shipping Containers) have been incorporated into ASTM D642-25.
  2. New Requirement for Moveable Platen: The updated standard now requires a method to drive a moveable platen at a uniform rate of 0.5 inches per minute, as outlined in the Apertures section. This change aims to improve the precision of testing.
  3. Test Orientation Recording: It is now required to record the orientation of the test during the process. This helps clarify results and makes tests easier to reproduce.
  4. Updated Guidance in Appendix X1 (X1.7): A new clarification was added specifying how to handle flaps when sealing boxes. “Flaps may either be bent directly into the sealing position or pre-broken to 180° and moved to the normal sealing position.”(1)

How Do These ASTM D642-25 Updates Affect You?

ASTM D642 changes refine the guidelines for compressive resistance testing, making it easier to maintain consistency across tests. The ASTM D642-25 changes to platen movement and the recording of test orientation help improve the accuracy and reliability of results.
